Dear friends,
Last summer I was compelled to stop talking to the television, get off the couch and take action. The issue that most motivated me to action was healthcare.
In 2007, my family and I had the opportunity to live and work in Trinidad & Tobago. During our time overseas, I observed the poor quality of care, the long wait times and the rationing of care that comes with a government dominated healthcare system. When we first arrived in Trinidad, we were warned by other Americans not to go to the public hospitals or clinics due to the poor quality of care. While on the island I ran an oil and gas service business where I had employees who had to suffer with chronic conditions which are easily remedied in the United States. Therefore, when the president and U.S. Congress began proposing a nationalized healthcare model, I understood from my experience in Trinidad that such a model would be harmful to the future of my family and yours.
It appears our nation is at a crossroad. Our current elected officials may very well pass this legislation through back door and deceptive tactics. However, if I am fortunate enough to be elected later this year as your representative for Louisiana’s 3rd Congressional District, I will do everything in my power to repeal it should it become law. In its place, I would propose and support common sense, free-market based reforms that enable all Americans who want healthcare to be able to purchase it.
I understand that allowing small businesses and individuals to come together to purchase group policies will help lower costs. I realize that allowing individuals and companies to contribute to health savings accounts will improve the portability of insurance policies, enabling people to change jobs without the fear of a lapse in coverage. We can all agree that increasing competition by allowing insurance companies to sell health insurance across state lines will lead to lower premiums for families. These are just a few of the common sense ideas that we can implement without adding one dollar in additional costs to our federal budget.
Thomas Paine reminds us that “Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered”. We must stay the course. We must remain vigilant in fanning the fire of liberty. Paying 10 years of taxes for 6 years of service is not healthcare, that funding abortions with taxpayer money is not healthcare, and piling more debt on future generations is certainly not healthcare. I am asking for your support in the Republican primary election on August 28, 2010. With your help, we can, and we will ‘fundamentally restore America’ to its constitutional foundation.

Campaign Update:
I was recently quoted in the Daily Iberian where I said “in [my] opinion there are two ways to run a campaign. You can raise and spend a lot of money and try to fool people with who you want them to think you are, or go out and spend your time meeting people and let them see who you really are. Since I have more time than money, that’s what I’ve been doing.”
Here are some of the towns we have recently visited: Houma, Chalmette, Pierre Part, Luling, LaPlace, Convent, Gramercy, Norco, Cut Off, Galliano, Raceland, Morgan City, Patterson, Berwick and New Iberia.
We are currently planning visits to the following parishes in the coming weeks: Terrebonne, Lafourche, and Plaquemines. We will post planned events on Facebook so you can participate. If you would like to host an event, or let me know of a planned event, please contact us at info@kristianmagar.com.
